Academic Background
Since 2002, Detlef Garz has been Professor of General Education Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz. Until 2002 he was Professor at the Carl von Ossietzky University, Oldenburg. He was Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton as well as at the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg in Delmenhorst. He was Guest Professor at the University of Freiburg, Switzerland as well as at Kangnam University in Yongin, South Korea.
Besides that he was Visiting Scholar at Stanford and Harvard University, and Research Assistant at the Centre for Human Development and Education at Harvard University. In 1988 he received his ””Habilitation”” at the University of Osnabrück, in 1982 he obtained his PhD at the University of Hamburg. He is on the Academic Advisory Board of the Qualitative Social Research Journal, of ‘Sozialer Sinn’ and the Journal of Adult Development. He is also a member of the Research Training Group ”Transnationale Soziale Unterstützung” funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
